Le Louvre Museum Jewellery Collection

Inspired by “Celebration at the Moulin Rouge” oil on canvas (circa 1889) by Giovanni Boldini. Born in 1842 in Ferrara, Italy, Boldini (1842-1931) settles in Paris permanently from 1871 onwards where he quickly becomes a fashionable portraitist and one of the great eyewitnesses to the frenetic activity of the modern town with its streets and its cafés.

Here Boldini represents the Moulin Rouge, a music hall establishment and a high spot of Parisian nightlife. The vigorous and dynamic brush strokes, the liveliness of the red, restore to the place a festive and free spirit, carrying off both diners and dancers in a brilliantly rendered composition.
